CONSUMERS | Become a Broker?
  • Do you want to be an independent business person?
  • Are you good at listening and giving advice?
  • Do you want to meet people and learn about different businesses?
If you answered "Yes" to any of the above questions, then a career as an insurance broker will be of interest to you.

Insurance brokers in Canada can be business owners who represent several insurance companies and offer a variety of insurance policies to their clients. Alternatively, they may be employed by a brokerage, which may vary in size from 1 to over 1,000 employees. Brokers advise their clients on the best insurance policies to meet their individual needs.

While it is not mandatory to have either a university degree or college diploma to pursue this career, business courses offered by many post secondary institutions do include insurance administration programs in their business diplomas.

Insurance brokers in Canada must be licensed by provincial regulatory bodies in order to conduct business.

To become an insurance broker you must first successfully complete the licensing exam. Licensing requirements vary from province to province. Please contact your local insurance brokers association for more information.

Training and professional development is a never-ending process. Courses to enhance the professionalism of your brokerage and increase your knowledge of the insurance industry are offered through IBAC's Member Associations.
